About This Quiz

This quiz tests your understanding of RN-specific content covered in Module Seven. Like the other curriculum quizzes, this is designed as a learning tool with detailed feedback on each answer.

You may take this quiz multiple times. Learning from the feedback is more valuable than achieving a high score on your first attempt.

What You Should Know Before Taking the Quiz

Review these key concepts from Module Seven:

Facility Selection and Risk Assessment

The decision between ARH and AFD depends on age, weight, BMI, ASA classification, and medical history. The BMI cutoff for the private facility is the ninety-ninth percentile plus three kilograms. High BMI combined with asthma significantly increases airway risk. ASA I or mild ASA II only at the private facility.

Fasting Safety

Nothing by mouth for five hours. Not even water. Violations mean surgery is cancelled. The teach-back method confirms parent understanding. Document that fasting was reviewed and verbalized back.

Insurance Pathways

MSSH requires a triage form for private facility cases and monthly coverage verification. Foster care requires MCFD pre-approval and verified legal guardian consent. NIHB and FNHA require same-claim submission of the GA fee with dental treatment.

Deadlines and Administration

H&P due three weeks before surgery. Deposit due or patient removed from slate at two weeks. Six administrative tasks after every appointment: GA Roster, slate, scanning, booking package, reminders, PMS flags.

Health Check Call and Parent Communication

Three-day pre-surgery call screens for fever, cold, cough, antibiotics, and illness. Escalate any concerning findings to Dr. Tsang. Six parent communication scripts cover opening, fasting, GA day, financial, travel, and BMI conversations.

Sample Questions to Prepare

Consider how you would respond to these scenarios:

Scenario One A three-year-old with well-controlled asthma (daily Flovent, no recent flares) needs full mouth rehabilitation under GA. The child’s BMI is at the ninety-fifth percentile. Which facility is appropriate and why?

Think about: What are the AFD criteria? Is the asthma well-controlled enough? Does the BMI meet the cutoff?

Scenario Two During the three-day health check call, a mother mentions her child finished a course of antibiotics two days ago for an ear infection but “seems fine now.” What should happen?

Think about: What does recent antibiotic use suggest? Who makes the decision to proceed or delay?

Scenario Three A foster parent arrives for the GA paperwork appointment and is ready to sign all consent forms. The child’s biological parent has retained some legal rights. What do you need to verify?

Think about: Who has legal authority to consent? What documentation is required?

Scenario Four A family is flying from Whitehorse for their child’s GA appointment. The parent wants to book the cheapest non-refundable flights and fly home the same evening after surgery. What guidance do you provide?

Think about: What are the travel risks? Why is same-day return problematic? How do you explain this sensitively?
